This is a question I get from a lot of parents. Typically we get athletes in the off-season that make a ton of progress and enter their seasons in the best shape of their lives. Because of their practice/game schedule, most stop training during their season only to find that their strength and speed begins to diminish and they start to feel worn down. EVERY professional athlete trains in season. There’s a reason for that. When you stop training, your body starts to change in several ways: Your muscles get weaker because you aren’t creating a high intensity overload stimulus to the muscles. Note that high intensity does not mean high effort. Running, even sprinting, won’t maintain lower body strength gains achieved through smart training. You begin to lose speed because your muscles get weaker and the quality of your movement (your running and transition technique) becomes increasingly sloppy. You begin to develop strength imbalances because the muscles you use repetitively throughout your practices and games start to become tight and the muscles on the other sides of these joints become overstretched and/or weak. Note that his SIGNIFICANTLY increases your risk of injury. All of the above changes lead to you having to exert MORE effort to accomplish the same movements. As the season goes on, this only gets worse. Not exactly how you want to enter the end of the season playoffs and tournaments! Depending on your practice schedule, I recommend athletes train 1-2 times per week during the season. Keep your muscles strong, your speed high, and conditioning unparalleled. Our customized in-season training programs will help ensure that your performance stays high without increasing your risk of overtraining (actually-your risk of overtraining will DECREASE). On top of that, our world class coaching staff is trained to recognize overtraining symptoms and adapt an athletes training program according to their energy levels. You won’t find that anywhere else! Be the best athlete you can be, ALL season long. Nothing will predict your success more than the strength of your commitment to achieving your goal. Stated in another way, your success will be determined by your refusal to accept anything else. Whether your goal is to make a new team, dominate during a sport season, or drop some body fat and “tone” up for the Summer, ask yourself, “How bad do I want it?” Too many people “want” something, but aren’t willing to put in the time and effort it takes to get it. These are the people that will likely have a LONG list of excuses at the tip of their tongue for why they aren’t working hard or smart enough. If they spent half as much time training as they did justifying their laziness, they’d probably get the results they want! Of course, this is not true of everyone. A month ago we had someone commute up from Baltimore, Maryland to train with us once a week. Living in Baltimore myself, I’m fully aware of how long and laborious that commute is (in excess of 2 hours). This was an athlete that understands the sacrifice it takes to be successful. Starting this week, another athlete will be making a nearly 2-hour commute THREE times per week to train with us. Why? He wants to prepare for tryouts. NOTHING will stop him from entering those tryouts more prepared than anyone else. Nothing. A couple days ago I spoke with a 15 year old athlete that said he was going to get a part time job to pay for training himself if his parents couldn’t afford it. He’s ready to take his game to the next level. I have a high level of admiration for these individuals. We could all learn something from them. What’s your reason for not investing in your success with our RESULTS GUARANTEED training? Too far? Not enough time? Too much money? The truly dedicated find ways to conquer these barriers. They don’t stumble upon success. They hunt it down and tackle it. Nothing will stop them. Learn from them. Even better. Become one of them. We can help. Last week, the Philadelphia Wings (the Philadelphia-based pro lacrosse team) featured an article I wrote called "The Best Exercise to Build Strong, Fast Legs". You can check it out here: The Best Exercise to Build Strong, Fast Legs I think most people will be surprised about "the best exercise." It's not a squat. It's not a leg press. But it does work. -Kevin Neeld P.S. The time to start preparing for Lacrosse season is now. With the ridiculous amount of snow we've acquired over the last couple weeks, it seems like everyone I've talked to is suffering from back pain. Repetitive bending and twisting with a shovel full of snow will do that to you! There's an easy way to prevent this back pain forever: Pay someone to shovel for you! ...or buy a snow blower. They're expensive, but so are days missed from work due to back pain and a life time of anti-inflammatory use. For those of you (myself included) that did the shoveling yourself and are in pain, sore, or generally worn down, I have a solution for you: Get a massage from the top massage therapists in the country! My good friend Craig Bohn is the Director of the Massage Department at Hockession Athletic Club. Having been to several manual therapists all over the East Coast, and studied multiple forms of manual therapy myself, I can personally attest that Craig and the incredible therapists on his staff, are the absolute best out there. At different times, I've gone into Hockession Athletic Club with shoulder pain, neck pain, back pain, and knee pain and come out feeling a new man. I've also referred several people there that said they've gotten the best massage they've ever had in their lives there. I wish they had an office at Endeavor. Until I'm able to convince them to set one up, MAKE THE TRIP! I've driven down there from Endeavor and up to there from my house in Baltimore. If they only had one facility and it was located in Boise, Idaho, I'd find a way to get there too. You owe it to yourself to invest in your own health and well-being. You do it by working hard here at Endeavor. Now do it by treating yourself to a massage from the best massage therapists in the country. If you have any questions about Hockession Athletic Club or my experiences there, please do not hesitate to email me. If you're ready to start feeling better today, send Craig an email or call him at (302) 239-6688 and schedule an appointment today! To your health and well-being, Kevin Neeld P.S. Craig also has experience working with elite level body builders and boxers. Massage isn't just for people that want to relax. It's always an incredibly valuable, but under-recognized way to get an advantage for athletes and body builders!
